In 1996, in conjunction with Peacock Printmakers of Aberdeen, Howard produced a series of prints titles Heretical Diagrams, and Bruno Consigned to the Flames relates to this series of works. Key to both the painting and Heretical Diagrams is the Neo-Platonist Giordano Bruno, who was burned in 1600 for heresies that included the defence of Copernicus.
