Barbara Rae is a painter of landscape, and the way in which we reshape the world is a favourite theme. Goya and the landscapes of Sutherland, Piper and Nash were early influences on her work. Visits to Spain, New Mexico and Tuscany since 1985 have resulted in a use of rich colour. Almond Grove was inspired by vineyards and farms behind Marbella on Spain's Costa del Sol. In her painting Rae uses collage - often picking up things from the studio floor - to build up her images. In many cases the finished work is almost an abstracted form of landscape.
