Where the Brahmaputra Meets the Clyde series no.11

Alan Kilpatrick

DESCRIPTION

Where the Brahamaputra Meets the Clyde series no. 11 by Alan Kilpatrick (b. 1963) shows the culmination of this series of works with two rivers meeting. This is done through layers of graphite and charcoal being erased to create a highlighted affect and an almost ridged appearance in the centre of the work, where the ripples of each river are meeting. It creates an illusion that the right side of the piece is darker and curling over the left side of the river, which is darker near the edges of the piece rather than the centre where the medium has been erased. This allows Kilpatrick to create the impression that two bodies of water are meeting in the centre, with a highlighted portion over this place they meet.

Kilpatrick created this series based off of a personal narrative of his father, who emigrated from Scotland to India post-World War II to work in the tea industry. It shows the two rivers intersecting, just as two identities intersect with emigration.
