Where the Brahamaputra Meets the Clyde series no. 10 by Alan Kilpatrick (b. 1963) presents a hazy viewpoint of looking down at a river's edge with a wooden, dilapidated structure. Kilpatrick's technique in developing delicate shadows is seen here through the lines of charcoal smudged gently to create ripples on the water. This is built up with a thicker layer of charcoal on the left side of the piece, which is smudged to partially hide the viewpoint, and to create the shadow of the structure across the water. This smudging technique allows Kilpatrick to provide a solemn intensity to this work.
Kilpatrick created this series based off of a personal narrative of his father, who emigrated from Scotland to India post-World War II to work in the tea industry. It shows the two rivers intersecting, just as two identities intersect with emigration.
