ARTIST PROFILE

Andrew Mackenzie, born 1969

Andrew Mackenzie was born in 1969 in Banff, North East Scotland. In 1993, he received a BFA (1987-91) and an MFA from Edinburgh College of Art. He's a painter whose work explores the space between abstraction and depiction. His work explores the connections between landscape and the built environment, frequently concentrating on rivers, reservoirs, tree forms, field edges, parking lots, and roadways, mixed with diagrammatic suggestions of manmade structures or open frameworks. These structures are sometimes invented, but they are more often inspired by buildings or other items he encounters on walks around his home in the Scottish Borders. Mackenzie was also heavily engaged in teaching children, adults, and workshops in Scotland and Ireland. Andrew has won numerous research and development awards, and his work can be found in a variety of collections, including The Fleming Collection, Marchmont House, and The University of Edinburgh. He has worked in many schools and organisations, including the National Galleries of Scotland, and has significant experience in arts education and lecturing. Awards included Erasmus Exchange to Athens School of Fine Art, Greece, 1990; RA Aeneas scholarship to Florence, Italy, 1991; Hope Scott Trust Award, 1998; Ballinglen Arts Foundation residency, County Mayo, Ireland, and Scottish Arts Council Assistance Grant and Arts Trust for Scotland Award, all 1999; and City of Edinburgh Council Visual Arts Award, 2001.
