Robert McGown Coventry ARSA RSW, 1855-1914
Born in Glasgow, Coventry trained at Glasgow School of Art then in Paris with Bouguereau and Fleury. Although he travelled in Europe and visited the Middle East, the majority of his works depict Scottish landscapes, with a particular interest in quayside scenes in fishing communities on both the East and West coasts. He was a near contemporary of the Glasgow boys, and shared their enjoyment of rustic realism and open-air painting, as well as the inspiration of French style and composition, but did not work closely with the group. He also painted for a time in Belgium and the Netherlands. He exhibited regularly throughout his life with the RSA, RSW and RGI.
