ARTIST PROFILE

Andrew Scott George, born 1952

Andrew Scott George is a British artist who was born in 1952 and graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1974. His paintings have recently come to be seen as part of the Scottish high realist art tradition, which dates back to the 18th century. The medium only allows for the application of small amounts of pigment at a time, so layers of fine brush strokes over the traditional gesso ground are required. On first glance, his paintings appear to be extremely detailed and well observed. On closer inspection, however, some paint passages are almost abstract, with more impressionistically suggested detail. The eye is drawn to a combination of vanishing points that provides a wonderful sense of space and distance. He paints landscapes in the Mendip Hills of North Somerset, the Dorset Coastline, and the Scottish hills around his home.
