ARTIST PROFILE

Barry McGlashan, b. 1974

Barry McGlashan, born and raised in Aberdeen, studied painting at Grays School of Art and graduated with honours in 1996. He returned to Grays School of Art in 1998, to teach drawing and painting until 2005, when he left to pursue a career in painting full-time. In 2001, The Royal Scottish Academy awarded him The Alastair Salvesen Scholarship, which allowed him to travel in the United States for three months. His work can be found in the Aberdeen Art Gallery, The Scottish Society (New York), and The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, among other places. The world Barry McGlashan creates in his paintings ranges from the intimate to the monumental, not only in the variety of his subjects but also in his ability to capture an interest with humans, landscape, and a story on the largest or smallest canvas. McGlashan firmly believes in the audience playing a role, and rather than giving away the entire plot, we enter the narrative at a point chosen by the director, invited to draw our own conclusions on an immersive story.
