ARTIST PROFILE

Graeme Todd, 1962 - 2022

Born in Glasgow, Todd studied painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. he graduated in 1985 and since then has exhibited extensively in Britain and abroad. His work was included in Scatter; New Scottish Art at the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow in 1990. After being an artist-in-residence in Basle, he had a solo show at the Fruitmarket in Edinburgh and Leeds Metropolitan University Gallery in 2000.
Todd's paintings draw on many sources and are unique in contemporary Scottish art. His loose compositions of lines, dots and splashes sealed by a warm, transparent lacquer veneer seem to be informed by astronomical diagrams and fifteenth-century Japanese ink drawings. In such works as Unk, details of clouds and foliage are clearly visible amid layers of painted marks.
