Island of Skye from Canna by David Benson (1938–2023) - former financier, chairman and trustee of the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation, and a skilled watercolourist - captures a serene view of the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides, as seen from the neighbouring island of Canna. The composition is dominated by expansive washes of grey and blue, with the sky occupying much of the scene. In the foreground, a sandy, rocky beach stretches across the picture plane, where a solitary figure stands, while two more are faintly visible in the distance. A narrow strip of sea, dotted with a few boats, leads the eye toward the softly rendered silhouette of Skye’s mountainous landscape beyond.

David Benson, 1938-2023
David Benson was a distinguished financier and skilled artist renowned for his role as chairman and trustee of the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation from 2010 to 2019. Born into a prominent banking family, he spent the majority of his career at Kleinwort Benson, where he served as vice-chairman. Though his professional life was shaped by the banking industry, Benson’s passion for art was equally central to his identity. As a watercolour artist, Benson was particularly noted for his landscapes, capturing scenes from places such as Sussex, Peeblesshire, and Bussento, the family’s home in southern Italy. His work was marked by a keen eye for colour, light, and perspective, and he remained devoted to the medium throughout his life. Benson’s dedication to watercolour earned him recognition as an honorary member of the Royal Watercolour Society. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Benson was a committed supporter of various cultural institutions, including the West Dean Foundation and Pallant House Gallery. He also played a key role in fundraising for the Royal Watercolour Society’s new gallery in London.
