Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding, 1787-1855
Born in Sowerby, near Halifax, Copley Fielding (as he is usually known) came from a family of artists, and was named after the Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck. He showed aptitude as a watercolour painter from an early age and trained with John Varley, winning a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1824 alongside Constable. He worked extensively with his father, Nathan, also a watercolour painter, specialising in landscapes and seascapes. He was a prolific artist, showing over 1700 works during his lifetime, and his work sold well. He painted all over Great Britain, including Wales, Sussex and Somerset and in Scotland - a painting of Loch Earn with Ben Vorlich is in the Tate collection.
