Thomas Fenwick, died 1849
Born in Northumberland, Fenwick travelled to Edinburgh with his friend and fellow apprentice John Wilson Ewbank (1799-1847), attracted by the possibility of being taught by Alexander Nasmyth. Their apprenticemaster relocated his business to Edinburgh and soon their paintings were attracting enough attention that they were able to give house-painting and concentrate on art. Fenwick painted mainly Scottish landscapes, including scenes around Edinburgh and Loch Lomond, occasionally painting seascapes or architecture. According to James L. Caw, his landscapes are often “bathed in a golden haze, artificial in effect but charming in quality”.
