Dieppe Harbour

Alexander Jamieson

DESCRIPTION

Dieppe was a favoured painting-group for British artists. It is know that the Jamiesons were there in 1905 and again in 1911, when travelling through France and Spain. The Harbour, Dieppe could have been painted in either year, although 1911 seems more probable.

ARTIST PROFILE

Alexander Jamieson ROI, 1873-1937

Jamieson was born in Glasgow and trained at Glasgow Art School of Art. Awarded a travelling scholarship in 1895, he went to Paris, where he taught himself by studying the work of the Impressionists and working en plein air. There he met his future wife, fellow art student Gertrude (Biddy) MacDonald. They remained in Paris for three years, moving to London in 1898. Jamieson was a painter of portraits, landscapes and architectural subjects. His early work displays the influence of Manet. Later he adopted a vividly impressionistic approach reminiscent of Monet.
