Cloths and Door by Richard Walker (b. 1955) depicts a view of a pile of white, black, and tan cloths, with an open door in the background. Walker uses wide, rectangular strokes of paint to form the walls and floor, blending from a lighter colour at the top of the wall and in the background of the floor, into a darker colour near the bottom of the wall and in the foreground of the floor, to create depth to the room. The blue and green colours in the details of the door and a portion of the right side of this painting further provide dimensionality to the overall piece.
Walker was well known for observational and interior paintings, often depicting even artist studios, which is possibly what is depicted here. This work contains elements of observational realism, where Walker has depicted the room and items exactly as they appear from his viewpoint, rather than creating an impression of the items.
