ARTIST PROFILE

Harry More Gordon, 1928-2015

More Gordon graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1949, a contemporary of Elizabeth Blackadder, John Houston and Richard Demarco. He worked as an illustrator and designer in London for magazines such as House & Garden and Vogue, returning to Edinburgh in the early 1960s to become head of illustration at ECA, a post he held for 25 years. He became a celebrated painters of portraits in watercolours, and was noted as a keen observer of his sitters, capturing unguarded tell-tale gestures. His subjects included Clarissa Dickson Wright, Alexander Armstrong, Gian Carlo Menotti and Sir Frederick Ashton. He also painted still lives, drawing the compositions from his own collection of found objects.
