Two Painters in a Landscape (Margot & Joan)

Margot Sandeman

DESCRIPTION

Two Painters in a Landscape (Margot & Joan) by Margot Sandeman (1922-2009) depicts two figures, one being the artist, sitting amongst some hay with a sheep resting at their feet and another sheep in the background. An artist's palette is on the bottom left of the piece, with bright blue and red paint depicted on it. One artist, being Margot, extends their arm outwards, with a possible brush in hand. On the left, sitting against hay is Joan Eardley, staring into the distance. The palette of the overall work is darker in tone, with only particular elements containing mroe vibrant colours of paint that draw the eye to the subjects and the foreground.

Sandeman was good friends with Joan Eardley and this piece was painted only three years before Eardley's death. The darker tone of colour in the scene and the stark contrast of light and shadow between the foreground and background create an intensity in the mood of the overall work, characteristic of much of Sandeman's contemplative works.
