Juliet Pannett MBE FRSA, 1911-2005
Born in Hove, Pannett studied under Louis Ginnet at the Brighton College of Art and was a recognized illustrator of Sussex locals by the age of eighteen. After a long halt throughout her marriage and the Second World War, she then returned to painting in the 1930s, becoming extremely sough-after for her portraits of the Royal family and top-tier politicians. She was a frequent sketcher at the House of Commons for all printed media. Her recognisable, effortless, charcoal sketches capture the half-smiling, affable profiles of prime ministers, cultural leaders, and other illustrious figures. At the age of 89, she portrayed the Queen, and continued to exhibit until the 1990s, when her failing eyesight forced her to seize taking in eminent sitters. A fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, she was awarded an MBE in 1993.
