Dusk, Plockton by David Martin (1922-2018) captures a ship in harbour at low tide, with the receding tide in muted strokes of blue colour amongst the floating ships in the background. White houses are on the hill behind, with a dark black mountainside against a grey, cloudy sky. Martin uses short, thick strokes of paint to build layers of colour that make up where the lone ship rests, with narrower, sweeping strokes making up the ship's main body. The bright white of the houses contrasts the overall murky tones Martin uses throughout the rest of the piece, capturing the moody atmosphere of the day.
Martin was well known for Scottish landscapes, particularly with contrasting dark and light colours to create a certain vibrancy to them. The buildup in paint is deliberately shaped strokes is also characteristic of much of his work, which focuses on rhythmic painting as a technique.
